A c-section is a surgery used to deliver a baby when a vaginal delivery isn't possible securely. A c-section can be planned or performed in an emergency. It carries more risk than a vaginal delivery, with a slightly longer recovery period.

What are the reasons for C-section delivery?

The reasons for a caesarean delivery include:

  1. baby’s head is too large for the birth canal
  2. the baby is coming out feet first (breech presentation)
  3. mother's health conditions such as hypertension or heart problems
  4. mother has active genital herpes that could be sent to the baby
  5. past history of caesarean delivery
  6. issues with the placenta, like placental abruption or placenta Previa
  7. issues with the umbilical cord
  8. reduced oxygen supply to the baby
  9. difficulty in normal labor
  10. the baby is coming out shoulder first (traverse presentation)

During the procedure

A doctor makes surgical cuts in the abdomen and the uterus to deliver the child.

  1. Abdominal cut: The specialist cuts through the abdominal wall. It's usually done horizontally near the pubic hairline.
  2. Uterine cut: The uterine cut is then made usually horizontally across the lower part of the uterus (low transverse cut).
  3. Delivery: The child will be delivered through the cuts. The specialist gets the baby’s mouth and nose free from fluids, then clamps and cuts the umbilical cord. The placenta is then taken out from the uterus, and the cuts are closed with stitches.

If you have regional anesthesia, you're probably going to have the option to hold the baby shortly after the delivery.

After the procedure

C-section needs a hospital stay for 2-3 days. Your c-section surgery doctor in Mahabubnagar will discuss pain relief options with you.

When the anesthesia starts to wear off, you will be encouraged to drink fluids and walk. This aids in preventing constipation and deep vein thrombosis. The bladder catheter will probably be taken out as quickly as possible once the woman starts walking.

You can begin breastfeeding when you're ready, even in the delivery room. Ask your nurse or a lactation expert to show you how to position yourself and support your baby so that you're comfortable. Your healthcare team will choose drugs for your post-surgical pain with breastfeeding in mind.
