An ultrasound scan also known as a sonogram, is a procedure that utilizes high-frequency sound waves to make an image of part of the inside of the body. It tends to be utilized to monitor an unborn baby, diagnose a condition, or guide a surgeon during specific procedures.

Why is an ultrasound scanning performed?

Ultrasound can be used for many reasons that includes to:

  1. View the uterus and ovaries during pregnancy and monitor the developing health of the baby
  2. View the uterus and ovaries in infertile females
  3. Diagnose the gallbladder disease
  4. Assess the flow of blood
  5. Guide a needle for biopsy or tumor treatment
  6. Inspect a lump in the breast
  7. Check the thyroid gland
  8. Find genital and prostate issues
  9. Assess inflammation in the joint (synovitis)
  10. Assess metabolic bone infection

How ultrasound scans work?

A small device known as an ultrasound probe is utilized, which gives off high-frequency sound waves.

You can't hear these sound waves, but when they bounce off various parts of the body, they make "echoes" that are picked up by the probe and turned into a moving image. This image is displayed on a monitor while the scan is performed.

How to prepare for an ultrasound scan?

Your doctor or the ultrasound clinic in Mahabubnagar you've been connected to; will let you know how to best prepare for your scan. In many cases, you won't have to do anything before or after having an ultrasound. Yet, for specific ultrasounds having a full bladder might be helpful. In transvaginal ultrasound, it is better to be on an empty bladder before the scan. It's always best to check with your doctor what they prefer when you book your appointment.

During the procedure

The gel is applied to your skin over the area being examined. It aids in preventing the air pockets, which can obstruct the sound waves that make the images. This safe, water-based gel is easy to eliminate from the skin and, if necessary, clothing.

A trained technician presses a small, hand-held device (transducer) against the area being studied and moves it as required to capture the images. The transducer sends sound waves into your body, gathers the ones that bounce back, and sends them to a computer, which creates the images.

Ultrasound is usually painless. However, you may experience mild discomfort as the sonographer guides the transducer over your body, especially if you're required to have a full bladder, or inserts it into your body.

Why else do you need an ultrasound during pregnancy?

In some cases, if you are experiencing pregnancy complications or are worried about your baby’s movements, your doctor or nurse could recommend additional ultrasound assessments on top of those routinely offered, to guarantee safe care for both you and your baby.
