Laparoscopic cystectomy is a minimally invasive procedure used to identify and eliminate the cysts or masses from one or both ovaries. When a cyst needs to be examined all the more intently or when a patient encounters symptoms because of a cyst, a doctor might recommend a laparoscopic cystectomy.

What to expect during laparoscopic cystectomy?

Laparoscopy can be performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon will inflate the abdomen with carbon dioxide gas to move the abdominal wall away from the organs to make the organs more noticeable. When the abdomen is inflated, the laparoscope is placed through tiny cuts made close to the belly button. 2 or 3 additional cuts are made at the pubic bone as well as on one or the other side of the lower abdomen. Incision length fluctuates yet most cuts are between one-quarter inch and 3/4 of an inch long.

A camera on the end of the laparoscope sends a live video feed to a screen for the surgeon as the individual performs the procedure. The specialist will examine the cyst and ovary all the more closely and eliminate the cyst utilizing surgical instruments that pass through the cuts. During a cystectomy, the surgeon works carefully so as not to harm the ovary or fallopian tubes (the tubes that connect the ovary to the uterus), and to preserve the fertility of the patient.

When is an ovarian cyst eliminated?

If an ovarian cyst is left untreated, it will generally resolve on its own. However, a solid or partially solid cyst might need to be assessed by a lab to ensure it isn't cancerous. While most ovarian cysts don't require treatment, we might screen your cyst and perform an ultrasound to decide if you need surgery.

The surgeon will close the cuts with stitches once the cysts have been eliminated. Women who had laparoscopic cystectomy can go home on the same day of their surgery. Recovery time can vary from person to person but many women get back to work and light activity within 1-2 weeks of the procedure.

When is the surgery recommended?

The surgery is recommended if a cyst:

  1. Develops more than 10 centimetres
  2. Ruptures and continues to bleed
  3. Causes signs that hinders daily activities
  4. Is non-cancerous yet causes symptoms
  5. Grows after menopause
  6. Is cancerous
  7. Undergoes twisting

If you suffer from severe ovary pain, you might have ovarian cyst torsion which could cut off blood circulation to your ovary. If you encounter twisted ovary symptoms, seek emergency care immediately to save your ovary.
